If you’re a human being living through this pandemic, chances are, you’ve experienced maskne at least once. If you haven’t, we are no longer friends.
We must wear masks but the side effects can really affect our skin. I’m not particularly acne-prone and my skin’s struggling so much. I can’t even begin to imagine what acne-prone people are dealing with.
Like the rest of the world, I’ve been trying so many different products hoping to find that one product that will fix my skin. And while that’s not possible, I’ve found some great ingredients that have made a difference in my skin.
I’ve done a lot of research on ingredients that will fight maskne and combined with my personal experience I’ve found 4 of the best ingredients to use if your skin is struggling during these tough times.
Check them out!
BHAs are one of the most commonly known chemical exfoliators that target clogged pores and breakouts. They’re different from other chemical exfoliators because they’re oil soluble. That means they go deeper into the pores to attract the oil and grime that’s stuck in there.
They also speed up your skin cell turnover which makes the lifecycle of your breakouts shorter. And they’re anti-inflammatory so they’re perfect for red, painful breakouts.
If you have sensitive skin I’d start slow with BHAs. I’d go for a low concentration and use them once a day to build up a tolerance. If your skin can tolerate more, you could add them to your routine 2-3 times a week, depending on the active ingredients you regularly use. It all depends on your skin and the products you choose.
If you’re looking for a gentler ingredient, Niacinamide is the one. This is also great to clear clogged pores and calm redness. My favorite thing about Niacinamide has got to be the fact that it helps you control your skin’s oil production. So if you have oilier skin, this can be a hero ingredient for you! It also has many other skincare benefits that don’t specifically target maskne but they work wonders on your skin.
If your skin can tolerate it, you can use Niacinamide daily in your routine and you can also mix it with other actives. It isn’t a scary ingredient because it’s not likely to irritate your skin and make it worse. That’s why I think it’s perfect for more sensitive skin.
Ceramides are not an ingredient that targets breakouts, but they’re equally if not more important for your skin’s overall health. Ceramides help your skin retain moisture and they protect your skin’s moisture barrier. They’re perfect to soothe irritated skin in the gentlest of ways.
This ingredient is perfect to wear under your mask because it hydrates the skin but it isn’t heavy. It’ll make sure to protect your skin from whatever’s going on in there and minimize the chances of irritating your skin. Ceramides are a must for all skin types.
