Depotting eyeshadows is a very simple thing. It might look complicated but if done right, it’s an easy way to keep your makeup organized and to save space.
So if you want to learn how to depot makeup the easy way, stay tuned.
Materials:
- Hair straightener
- Eyeshadows or other makeup product of your choice
- A pointed metal tool (It doesn’t have to be the same as the picture)
Step 1
With some eyeshadows, like MAC, there’s a groove in between the eyeshadow and the pot. Use the metal tool to separate those two and move on to the next step.
Other brands of eyeshadow don’t have a groove like MAC does. In that case you can move straight to step number 2.
Step 2
Place the shadow in the flat iron from one to three minutes. The heat will not damage the eyeshadow. I would recommend leaving the shadow in the heat for a bit longer. You’ll know it’s ready when you can see the edges of the shadow pan separate from the packaging.
After the glue that holds the shadow to the packaging melts, it’s time to get the pan out. Using your pointed metal tool, wedge it in just enough to be able to pop the pan out. If you’re having trouble doing so or you see that the shadow could get damaged, stop immediately and put the shadow back into the flat iron. Chances are the glue wasn’t completely melted.
Step 3
Once they’re out of the packaging let the pans cool down for about ten minutes. After that you can remove the remaining glue on the pans. If you want to stick your eyeshadows or whatever you’re depotting into a Z Palette make sure to stick a magnet at the bottom of the pan to ensure that it’s safe and that it won’t move.
Remember to also write the names of the eyeshadows in the back so that they’re easier to identify. You can write it directly in the pan, write it on a sticker and then stick that to the pan, or do as I did and use the sticker that was in the original packaging.
And that’s it! It’s a super easy process and in no time you’ll be depotting everything and putting it in your Z Palette. Remember this method can apply to many different makeup products. So if you want to depot a blush, a bronzer, a setting powder; you totally can.
Now all you have to do is bust all your things out and start depotting!

Great post, I always seem to mess up my eyeshadows trying to de-pot them. I am definitely going to try it this way.
